Kwanzaa is celebrated from December 26 until January 1. It is
a holiday period during which African family values, community and culture are celebrated. Handmade Kwanzaa crafts and books are important gifts during the celebrations. Although it is still predominantly observed by African-Americans, the custom is spreading and becoming popular in other countries too.
The words and phrases associated with Kwanzaa are in Swahili – an African language which is a widely spoken. Kwanzaa refers to first fruit. The first fruit celebration is an ancient African community celebration of a fruitful harvest and is a period of reflection, introspection and remembrance of ancestors.
